Rockcliffe is pretty seaside village in Kirkudbrightshire, 20 miles from the historic market town of Dumfries. It is situated on one of Scotland’s most scenic coastlines, stretching along the expansive Solway Firth. This wide estuary forms part of the border between Scotland and England and is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that teems with wildlife.
Our house gives magical and uninterrupted views across the estuary to Rough Island, Hestan Island and on a clear day the Cumbrian Coast.
At low tide you can access on foot the bird sanctuary on Rough Island, walking across the sand flats, past lobster nets across shells and shingle.
At high tide, you can swim in relatively warm, shallow water and children can play on the quiet family-friendly beach. The ice cream van turns up come rain or shine.
Part of the village belongs to the National Trust of Scotland and is a nature reserve with wildflower meadows and woodland. You can explore the Dark Age trading post of Mote of Mark, which stands on a rocky outcrop and has lovely views from the top. Or walk a mile or so along the coast and up the cliffs to Castle Point, the site of a Roman Fort.
